F1 2025 vs 2026: What's Really Changing

F1 2025 vs 2026: dit verandert er echt

The 2026 Formula 1 season will not be a minor update. While 2025 largely builds on the current generation of cars, 2026 will go down in history as a completely new era. New engines, modified aerodynamics, and even new teams on the grid. For car enthusiasts, this means: a different look, a different sound, and probably a different balance of power.

What exactly changes between F1 2025 and F1 2026?

New engine regulations

In 2025, teams will still be running the current 1.6-liter V6 turbo hybrid power units. The focus is on efficiency, but the MGU H remains part of the package.

In 2026, that will fundamentally change. The MGU H disappears, and the electrical component becomes much more important. Approximately 50 percent of the power must then come from electrical energy. In addition, there will be a complete focus on sustainable fuels.

For enthusiasts, this means a technically more interesting balance between internal combustion engine and electric power. The engine sound will be different, and energy management will become even more important during races.

Active aerodynamics

The 2025 cars will remain based on the current ground effect concept introduced in 2022. In 2026, active aerodynamics will be introduced. This means that components such as front and rear wings can adapt to straights or corners.

Less drag on the straight, more downforce in the corner. In theory, this should lead to better overtaking maneuvers and less reliance on DRS as we know it now.

More compact cars

A frequently heard criticism of the current generation of F1 cars is their size and weight. In 2026, the cars will be smaller and lighter. Narrower wheelbase, less weight, and a more agile character.

For drivers, this means more precision. For fans, hopefully more spectacle.

New teams and manufacturers

While 2025 will still be driven with the current grid, 2026 may see new names. Audi officially enters as a factory team, and Cadillac is also working on an F1 entry. This means new power units, new collaborations, and possible shifts in the balance of power.

For motorsport enthusiasts, this is perhaps the most interesting change. New brands almost always bring new dynamics.

What does this mean for you as a fan?

2025 will be the last season of an era. 2026 marks a reset. Teams must rebuild, develop, and gamble on the right concept choices.

And as we know from previous major regulation changes, this can completely shake up the pecking order.
