From first car love to Volkswagen Polo: Lukas on driving, dreams, and building Boldons
Some cars stay with you because they are beautiful, others because they teach you something. At Boldons, we love both. In this blog, we take you into the story of Lukas van Starkenburg, someone who not only helps build Boldons but also simply lives for cars, mileage, and that one perfect driving experience. From a first car that teaches you to drive through trial and error, to a Volkswagen Polo that suddenly makes you truly proud.
What do you get out of it? An honest car story, but also practical lessons on maintenance, warranty, and how to turn "just a car" into something that fits your lifestyle.
Lukas started as many enthusiasts do: not with a dream car, but with something available. His first car was a 2001 Daihatsu automatic, coincidentally the same age as him. That car came soon after he got his driver's license because his grandmother stopped driving. And honestly: in those first years, you don't just learn to drive, you also learn limits. Sometimes your own, sometimes the car's. The first year it passed the MOT just fine, but the next year reality hit hard. So much was wrong that it was no longer financially justifiable to get it back on the road properly. Yet one thing remained: mechanically, it was a top car. That old automatic drove surprisingly smoothly, and precisely those kinds of details make you look back with a smile later, even if it wasn't technically perfect.
What immediately stands out in Lukas's story is how quickly your view of cars changes as you gain experience. He had multiple cars, and in between, a car that wasn't really "his": a company car. During that period, he was given a car to drive everywhere because he was often on the road for appointments and fieldwork. Lots of miles, through different cities, and especially gaining a lot of practical experience. Exactly that kind of driving experience shapes you as a car enthusiast. You discover what is comfortable, what feels reliable, and which cars genuinely suit you in daily use.
That mental switch also happened to Lukas. His current car is a Volkswagen Polo, and that's quite ironic in a way. He came from a period when Volkswagen had a bad reputation in his circle, due to disappointing experiences with older models. Recognizable, because one story can completely color your perception of a brand. Until you step into something that just feels right.
Through his work, he temporarily drove a Polo that was remarkably close to his current version, even in a royal blue color that immediately caught his eye. And then came the moment when feeling took over: the seating position was right, the dashboard felt modern, the screen was nicely angled towards the driver, and the steering wheel gave exactly that sporty feeling without being overdone. No frills, no unnecessary luxury, but simply a car that drives smoothly and feels logical. That is often the turning point for enthusiasts. No longer choosing based on image, but on driving experience.
Ultimately, the choice for the Polo was a conscious step towards reliability and daily driving pleasure. Not an extreme version, not an exaggerated sports model, but a solid car you can rely on every day. And that trust was quickly confirmed. In less than a year, Lukas put more than 25,000 kilometers on the odometer. Not just commuting, but real car kilometers: road trips to France, drives through Germany and Belgium, and longer journeys towards Southern France. Exactly how a car should be used within a car lifestyle where driving is part of the experience.
What also comes through strongly in his story is the importance of maintenance and consciously treating your car. Lukas noticed, for example, that the steering wheel wasn't perfectly straight at higher speeds. Instead of driving on with it, he chose to go back to the garage to have the car realigned. That sounds minor, but these kinds of details make a big difference in driving comfort and wear and tear in the long run. Especially with a used car, it's smart to stay alert for small signals and act on them immediately.
That's why he also opted for a warranty package with roadside assistance, so he could drive through Europe with peace of mind. And that's something we, as the Boldons community, fully support. A car is not just a purchase; it's an investment in freedom, hobby, and daily pleasure. Then you want the certainty that any problems can be resolved without it immediately taking away your entire driving enjoyment.
A special moment was the problem with the windshield wipers that spontaneously kept working. Such a technical ailment that isn't always reproducible at the garage. Ultimately, it didn't turn out to be a permanent problem, but it does show how important it is to stay alert and plan timely maintenance. Lukas, therefore, wants to have another service performed towards the end of his warranty period, including inspection and reporting. Not out of fear, but out of love for the car. That's the difference between driving and truly being a car enthusiast.
And of course, dreams are part of that too. His ultimate dream car is the Ferrari F40, an icon imbued with pure car love. Below that is a more realistic dream: an Audi RS6. A car that combines performance and practicality, something many enthusiasts can relate to. Still, the beautiful thing is that he currently feels completely satisfied with his Polo. Even when he sees more expensive or luxurious cars driving by, the feeling remains that his own car perfectly fits his current phase and lifestyle.
At Boldons, it's precisely this mentality that matters. Not just looking at the biggest or most expensive cars, but being proud of what you drive, what you experience, and how you make your passion visible. Whether that's a daily driver, a project car, or a dream car for later. Car love is in the details, the kilometers, the memories, and the pride you feel when you look back at your own car in the parking lot.
Lukas's story shows that every car becomes part of your personal automotive journey. From your first car where you learn everything, to a reliable daily driver that takes you on trips, towards goals, and new memories. That is car lifestyle in its purest form. And it's precisely that feeling we want to continue to share within the Boldons community: passion, experience, and pride in everything related to cars.
