The first snowflakes often create a beautiful winter scene, but on the road, it can quickly become a different story. Slippery roads, limited visibility, and longer braking distances require extra attention. Whether you drive daily or enjoy a winter drive, good preparation makes all the difference.
Start with your car
A safe winter drive starts with the basics. Check if your winter tires have sufficient tread. In the Netherlands, they are not mandatory, but in snow and black ice, they are not a superfluous luxury. Tire pressure also deserves attention, as cold temperatures affect it. Don't forget your windshield wiper fluid and make sure it is suitable for frost.
Visibility and lighting
Good visibility is crucial during snowfall. Completely de-ice your windows before driving off and check if your windshield wipers are still in good condition. Also, make sure your lights are clean. Dirt and snow can significantly reduce light, which is especially dangerous at dusk and in the dark.
Adjust your driving style
Perhaps logical, but often underestimated. Maintain more distance, brake gently, and avoid abrupt steering movements. On slippery roads, your car needs more time to come to a stop. Extra caution is especially important at roundabouts and intersections.
Be prepared for on the road
A small winter kit in the car can prevent a lot of stress. Think of an ice scraper, gloves, a blanket, and possibly a flashlight. If you unexpectedly get stuck or are in a traffic jam, you'll at least be prepared. A charged phone or power bank is also not a superfluous luxury.
Will you be well prepared for the road this winter?
Take the time to prepare your car for winter and adjust your driving style to the conditions. This way, driving will remain a pleasant experience even during snow.
