Push through or fight back: The F1 standings and Max Verstappen's chances

Doordrukken of terugslaan: De F1-tussenstand en de kansen voor Max Verstappen

The 2026 Formula 1 season has thoroughly shaken up the field. With new regulations and technical changes, the power dynamics on the grid have shifted, making every race Sunday unpredictable. Halfway through the championship, the pinnacle of motorsport is at a crucial stage where every point, upgrade, and tactical decision makes a difference.

The championship battle at the top

Currently, Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' standings with 204 points. The young Mercedes driver is having a very strong season and is consistently delivering results. Veteran Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari follows closely with 159 points, trailed by George Russell with 154 points and Charles Leclerc with 126 points.

In the constructors' championship, Mercedes leads the way with 358 points, with Scuderia Ferrari in second place with 285 points. McLaren occupies third position in the championship with 195 points.

Where does Max Verstappen stand and what can we expect?

For Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing, the season so far has been a challenging quest for the right balance and speed. Verstappen currently holds seventh place in the standings with 91 points, behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris (103 points) and Oscar Piastri (92 points).

Despite the points deficit, the Dutchman remains one of the most decisive factors on track. A few important points for the second half of the season:

  • Technical updates: Red Bull Racing is working hard on aerodynamic and mechanical upgrades to close the gap to the top.

  • Decisive circuits: On circuits where pure driving skill, tire management, and racecraft outweigh pure top speed, Verstappen is always a candidate for the podium.

  • The tactical battle: As the differences in the midfield are incredibly small, qualifying sessions and pit stop strategies will be crucial for the final result.

Can Red Bull still turn the tide?

The upcoming race weekends will show whether the chasers can close the gap to the front. Whether Verstappen can regain connection with the top five remains one of the most interesting questions for the remainder of the season.
