F1 drivers swap race cars for LEGO cars at Silverstone

F1-coureurs ruilen racewagens in voor LEGO-wagens op Silverstone

The Silverstone race weekend is just around the corner, and for motorsport enthusiasts, model builders, and collectors of iconic memorabilia, this promises to be a memorable edition. While preparations for the official Grand Prix are in full swing, Formula 1 and the LEGO Group are joining forces this weekend with a special event. The traditional Drivers' Parade on Sunday, July 5, 2026, will be completely transformed into a parade of drivable LEGO cars.

What can we expect?

During the drivers' parade, which takes place between 90 and 120 minutes before the start of the main race, all 22 drivers will not get into the usual classic convertibles or on a trailer. Instead, they will take their seats behind the wheel of their own custom-made LEGO mini-car. The parade can be followed live on Formula 1's official YouTube channel on Sunday, July 5, at 2:00 PM Dutch time (1:00 PM local British time).

This concept builds on a previous, smaller activation during the 2025 Miami Grand Prix. At that time, the teams had to share ten cars, which already led to a lot of interaction, overtakes, and viral video material on social media. For the 2026 Silverstone edition, the setup has been significantly expanded: each driver now has their own car.

Technology behind the bricks

For those who appreciate detail and construction, the specifications of these mini-cars are interesting. The vehicles are not merely intended as static scale models but function as fully-fledged karts.

  • Development and construction: A team of 20 designers and engineers worked for over 6,400 hours on the fleet at the LEGO factory in Kladno, Czech Republic.

  • Number of bricks: Each vehicle consists of over 28,000 original LEGO bricks.

  • Weight: The cars weigh a total of approximately 280 kilograms, of which 65 kilograms are purely building bricks.

  • Performance: Underneath the bodywork is a mechanical chassis with standard kart wheels, capable of reaching a top speed of 25 km/h.

The designs are precisely tailored to the current grid. The karts are built in the official team colors of the 2026 season, including sponsor logos and the drivers' specific race numbers. This means you will see recognizable details from the cars of Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Lewis Hamilton, among others, but translated into a compact, angular version.
